Our Evaluation Process
Initial Inquiry (Free)
To begin, send us clear photos of your piece—including any signatures, hallmarks, and fine details. Let us know the designer or maker if known, approximate era, condition notes, and include any provenance documents you may have.
Our team will review your submission and reply within 3–5 business days to confirm whether a full evaluation is recommended.
Full Evaluation (In-Person Preferred)
We prefer an in-showroom appointment where our specialists examine your piece under magnification, test materials and hallmarks, research provenance if needed, and assess condition. The process takes about 1–2 hours, is completely free, and comes with no obligation.
For clients outside the New York area, we offer a pre-paid, fully insured FedEx shipping label so your jewelry can be safely sent to us for evaluation.
Offer & Documentation
If The Back Vault decides to acquire or represent your piece, we will prepare a written offer based on authenticated value, condition, and current market demand.
A specialist will reach out by phone or email to review the offer with you and answer any questions you may have.
Agreement & Payment
Once you agree to the offer, The Back Vault handles all paperwork and documentation. Payment is typically made the same day or next business day, via your preferred method—wire transfer, check, or other arrangements.
The overall timeline from evaluation to payment is usually 10–15 business days or sooner.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you evaluate jewelry that I'm not 100% sure about the authenticity of?
Yes. If you're uncertain about authenticity, that's exactly when you should contact us. Our evaluation is designed to determine authenticity. We'll assess what you have and let you know what we find.
What if I don't have any paperwork or provenance for my piece?
That's normal for estate jewelry. We research what we can and document what we find. Missing provenance doesn't disqualify a piece if other authenticity markers are clear.
How long does the whole process take?
From initial inquiry to payment, typically 10-15 business days. Expedited evaluation is available if you have a timeline (Depending on communication).
What's the smallest piece you'll evaluate?
We evaluate pieces starting at approximately $3,000 in estimated value. Below that, the cost of authentication and documentation doesn't justify specialized evaluation.
Will you buy pieces with stones that have been replaced or jewelry that's been resized?
Yes. Restoration is normal and expected in vintage jewelry. We assess the quality of any restoration work and price accordingly.
